Save the elephant day
Today, is save the elephant day. It's purpose is to spread awareness and understanding of the dangers elephants face, and threats they have to overcome to survive.
Why is awareness important?
Awareness is required so that the general public can understand the importance and implications of our actions, or inactions, on the fate of elephants. The first step is to acknowledge there is a problem.
Ivory and habitat loss
The two biggest threats to elephants are the ivory trade and their habitat loss. Both, are due to us humans.
What can we do?
Read up on the problems, share that information, and spread the word... the more people that understand the problems, the better.
If you want to do more, than i suggest you make a donation to a registered charity. If you do not know which one to choose, I suggest the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. As a scientist, I understand the need of research in order to fully comprehend the problems and help in the most efficient way possible. For more information on them, you can read an interview I did a few years ago with a member of the ATE team, Dr Vicki Fishlock.
